Kossuth Square - St. Stephan's Basilica
This statue is in the far Northern corner of the Parliment area and is the memorial to Mihály Károlyi, the President of the 1918 Hungarian Republic who was forced into emigration in 1919.
This is a little square right next to Parliment. It is Kossuth Square, the statue is Lajos Kossuth, the leader of the 1848-49 Hungarian War of Independence and the elected Governor of Hungary. A brilliant speaker and political writer, he died in exile in Turin.
This is some flame memorial for the 1956 Revolution. How's that for info? There is a flame in the top center, and we don't know if it's an eternal flame.
This museum is right across the street from the Parliment Building.
Mackenzie had to sit down to take a break while I took a picture of the museum and Lu just stayed at the other end and waited.
We passed this statue of Imre Nagy. Nagy was Hungary's Prime Minister in 1953, he loosened government controls and was critical of Soviet influence. He was denounced and removed from office, then recalled as premier shortly before the 1956 uprising, within a month Soviet troops suppressed the revolt. Nagy was executed in 1958.
At one point we stopped so Mackenzie could swing at a playground and if you notice behind her is Lu checking the map and figuring out that yes, we did go the long way (again).

Next we passed this memorial to the Soviet soldiers who fell during the liberation of the capital.
We're almost to the Basilica!
