Husky Farm

Our next trip was to a husky farm where you get to see and learn about raising and training the dogs. They have a snowmobile trip to these also, but you only get on the dog sled for a short ride (and they were full) and Mackenzie wanted to go on a long dog sled ride. The owner picked us up at the hotel and took us to his Husky farm and told us about raising dogs. We walked around meeting the dogs (he has around 45) and petting them.

Then we started off on our ride. We went through the forests, it was quiet and beautiful and did you know that dogs can pee on the run. We were out for about 45 min to 1 hour.

We took a break part way through so the dogs could rest. It was a little bit warmer than they like it. It was around 0 °C, but they like it closer to -12 °C.

While they were resting Mackenzie and I walked up and down the line petting the ones who were awake (when they have a break some make the most of it and doze).

They sleep outside year round.

World's Northernmost McDonalds

After the Husky farm we decided to head to the World's Northernmost McDonalds.

Luckily they had regular McDonald's food (no reindeer) and a special seat for Mackenzie.

I think I need to travel places that have some sun soon.

There's even a little playset for the kids outside (yeah, that's fun).

Reindeer Safari

We did the Snowmobile to a reindeer farm safari and it was a beautiful day. It was clear and the sun was out, and it was 2 °C.

We started off crossing the frozen waters (we hope, since snow is melting all around us and they were shoveling the 4-6 feet thick piles of snow off the rooftops so they wouldn't fall) of the Ounaskoski River and through the forest trails to a reindeer farm.

When we were in the forest our guide (Mikko, a blond, blue eyed Fin who Mackenzie thought was even cuter) had us stop because he saw some reindeer off to the side. He said that since the snow has been so deep a lot of the animals use the trails from the snowmobiles. We shut off the engines and watched three reindeer cross in front of us, and then another three come out and start up the trail ahead of us. They eventually turned off the trail and took another one off of the one that we were on.

When we crossed over another river these guys were out ice fishing.
